The NDTPrep Study System: How to Actually Pass Your CSWIP Exam
Three products, one study loop for CSWIP 3.1u and 3.2u. Interactive Theory, Q&A Exam Prep, and Flashcard Trainer share the same module numbers to take you from learn to exam day. Built on active recall and spaced repetition for working offshore inspection divers.
Why recognising answers is not enough
Reading the CSWIP manual once feels productive but familiar is not the same as known. The exam tests retrieval under pressure. You need to encode the topic, pull it back out with active recall, then consolidate it across days and weeks. One product alone leaves gaps, the full loop does not.
The three stages: learn, drill, reinforce
The study system runs one module through three stages before you move on. Stage 1 Interactive Theory encodes the idea in short focused lessons. Stage 2 Q&A Exam Prep retrieves it with exam-style active recall. Stage 3 Flashcard Trainer consolidates it with spaced daily sessions. Same module numbers all the way through keeps the loop tight.
Stage 1 — Interactive Theory (encode)
Short focused CSWIP lessons, one clear idea at a time, in the order the exam expects. You build a mental model instead of a highlighted manual. Focused mode handles the detail and diffuse mode connects it when you step away.
Stage 2 — Q&A Exam Prep (retrieve)
Close the book and answer exam-style multiple choice questions. Every question is active recall, the exact skill the CSWIP paper tests, and this is where knowledge gaps show up. Retrieval practice beats re-reading because testing builds what you know.
Stage 3 — Flashcard Trainer (consolidate)
Short daily flashcard sessions spaced across your rotation, using the same module numbers as Theory and Q&A. You are not learning new content, you are cementing what you already encoded and tested. Twenty minutes a day across a trip beats one cram session.
How the CSWIP study loop works
Round one is slow with gaps everywhere, which is normal. Round two runs the same modules faster and weak spots shrink. Round three and beyond each loop runs quicker until shaky topics feel automatic under pressure. It is a loop not a line, run across weeks offshore rather than one weekend.
The learning science behind it
Two modes: focus hard in short blocks then let diffuse mode connect the pieces. Active recall: close the material and produce the answer. Spaced practice: the same hours spread across days beat one long session. Honest metacognition: rate what you thought you knew and attack the 1s and 2s first. Chunking: one module through all three stages before scattering across the course. Principles adapted from Barbara Oakley's work on how learning happens.
