How to Pass the CSWIP 3.2u Exam
Complete exam guide for CSWIP 3.2u. Covers the multiple choice theory exam, MPI practical, weld toe grinding, hardest topics and how to prepare as a working inspection diver.
CSWIP 3.2u exam format
The CSWIP 3.2u exam consists of a multiple choice theory exam and a hands-on practical assessment. Both must be passed. Paper A covers general NDT theory — 50 multiple choice questions, 75 minutes, 70% pass mark. Paper B covers sector-specific subsea applications — 50 multiple choice questions, 75 minutes, 70% pass mark.
CSWIP 3.2u practical assessment
The practical assessment consists of two parts. First, magnetic particle inspection of three ferritic steel welds using various magnetisation techniques with fluorescent inks and ultraviolet light. Second, practical weld toe grinding of a 150mm length of weld to a specific written requirement. Both parts are pass/fail.
CSWIP 3.2u entry requirements
Candidates must hold a current CSWIP 3.1u certificate and satisfactorily complete a CSWIP approved training course on the methods in which they are to be examined. They must provide evidence of six hours practical experience in Grade 3.2u techniques. This practical experience may be tank based.
CSWIP 3.2u theory topics
The 3.2u theory exam covers magnetic particle inspection, subsea MPI application, ultrasonic testing, technique preparation, corrosion protection, visual inspection, photography and video, and NDT techniques general knowledge. A detailed knowledge of the 3.1u syllabus is also required.
CSWIP 3.2u five year renewal
The five year renewal practical includes general survey with oral commentary, close video inspection with commentary, photography, digital ultrasonic thickness readings, MPI on two welds, and remedial grinding. Candidates must provide evidence of a minimum of 100 hours underwater inspection experience over the five year certificate period.
How to prepare for CSWIP 3.2u
Start with the free Weld Defects eBook and Welding Defects Practice Exam to build your foundation. Then use the NDTPrep 3.2u Bundle which includes four courses — the 3.1u Q&A Course, 3.1u Flashcard Trainer, 3.2u Q&A Course, and 3.2u Flashcard Trainer. Both levels of theory must be sharp. Attend an approved CSWIP training centre for the official course and practical time before sitting the exam.
CSWIP 3.2u hardest topics
The most challenging areas for 3.2u candidates are MPI technique selection for different weld orientations, UV light intensity requirements and sensitivity checks, calibration and subsea application of NDT equipment, and understanding how the subsea environment affects inspection technique performance.
