How to Pass the CSWIP 3.1u Exam: Tips and Strategies for Underwater Inspectors

Complete CSWIP 3.1u exam preparation guide. Learn exam format, hardest topics, MCQ strategy, practical assessment tips, and proven study approach.

CSWIP 3.1u exam format

The CSWIP 3.1u exam consists of two written papers (Paper A General 50 MCQ 75 minutes, Paper B Sector Specific 50 MCQ 75 minutes) and a practical assessment (5 inspection tasks, 180 minutes). Both papers must reach 70% to pass. Practical assessment is pass/fail on competence.

The 3 hardest topics on CSWIP 3.1u

Corrosion science and cathodic protection systems: why zinc protects steel, sacrificial anode vs impressed current systems, CP readings and target ranges. Welding defects and terminology: defect names must be precise (lack of fusion, cold crack, hot crack, centre-line crack). Deterioration mechanisms: pitting vs general corrosion, fatigue cracking, stress corrosion cracking.

Common mistakes on CSWIP 3.1u exam

Wrong terminology: using vague language costs marks. CP value confusion: Ag/AgCl seawater ranges are -850 to -1050 mV. Defect names: examiners check precise terminology, not intent. Time panic: 90 seconds per question, if stuck move on. Second-guessing answers: first instinct usually right.

CSWIP 3.1u MCQ strategy

Read all four answer options before selecting. Watch for "best answer" language and "which is most likely" phrasing. Tricky questions: "all of the above" requires all three to be correct. Negatives: "which is NOT true" means pick the false answer. Time management: if question takes more than 90 seconds, move on and return if time allows.

CSWIP 3.1u practical assessment

Assessors check procedure and equipment setup, safety awareness and hazard recognition, clear communication using technical terminology, accuracy and consistency of readings. Practical tasks: visual inspection (steel and concrete), CP measurement (reference electrode setup and readings), UT thickness measurement (calibration and grid readings), underwater photography (scale and clarity), CCTV commentary (technical description).

CSWIP 3.1u study path

Phase 1 scope (weeks 1-2): understand what topics exist. Phase 2 learn (weeks 3-6): go through content systematically. Phase 3 practice (weeks 7-10): do 500+ practice questions and drill weak topics. Phase 4 revision (final 2 weeks): timed full exams and flashcard drilling. Study timeline: realistic 8-10 weeks for working offshore divers.
